5 stars

A beautiful biography in verse recounting various moments in the life of Maya Angelou.

From her childhood to her reading “On the Pulse of Morning” at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton, the book shares glimpses throughout Angelou’s life. It includes moments from her childhood, her work as a singer and dancer, her friendship with James Baldwin, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcom X, and writing her first book.

Told in beautiful verse, the narration presents a range of topics and emotions, including themes of family, friendship, grief, trauma, resilience, hope, and action.

The artwork is simply stunning. The combination of watercolor and collage presents powerful images of hard times, happy times, and everyday moments in life.

Also includes a timeline of events at the back of the book.

A remarkable book and a beautiful tribute to Angelou and her lasting impact.
