Absolutely fantastic. Easily one of my new favorite books of all time. I wish I had this book as a kid.
Jane has learned to accept her plainness. But after her parents’ death, her cousin is set to inherit everything including the house she lives in. Her only chance is to find someone to marry her in order to receive her dowry and she knows just the person. That is… until he’s kidnapped by a mermaid.
This was such a wild ride filled with great characters, wonderful messages, fun humor, and all around a good time.
Great pacing. I was instantly drawn into the story. I loved meeting the different characters and exploring underwater folklore. The story is so funny and sweet, with just the right amount of darkness to drive it all home.
Fantastic artwork as is always the case with Brosgol. Wonderful humor and emotions conveyed in the art.
The book goes beyond the “what’s on the inside that counts” trope to show how arbitrary beauty standards are, call out double standards, and question the value we place on various aspects. I just adored the ending. It was absolutely perfect.
Love, love, love this book! An truly fantastic read. I’ve read it twice already.
