Illustrated by Alexandra Badiu

3 stars

An early reader introduction to the life and work of Yayoi Kusama. The book goes through Kusama’s childhood in Matsumoto, her experience with hallucinations, living in the United States, interactions with other well-known artists, and her impact as an artist, including her various types of work and exhibitions.

I appreciate the amount of information presented. The book is broken down into 5-6 page chapters, focusing on a different time period in Kusama’s life.

Great art style that helps break up the text and pairs well with the information presented.

The backmatter highlights other famous women artists and includes information about art and the geography of Japan. There is also an art activity and a comprehension quiz.

An informative read with wonderful, bright illustrations and age-appropriate information.
