A powerful fictionalized account that tells the story of Plyler v. Doe, which mandated free public school education for all US residents regardless of immigration status.
This nonfiction picture book follows Alfredo Lopez who loves school where he can learn and see his friends. But one day, his parents have him stay home… and the next day… and the next day. Alfredo doesn’t understand why he can’t go to school like everyone else. Then his parents do something brave. Despite fearing they may be deported, they join a court case to fight for their son’s right to attend school.
A fantastic book that uses kid-friendly language to tell the story of the court case and recognize those who fought for the right to free education.
Lovely illustrations. They wonderfully showcase the emotions of the story.
Includes helpful backmatter with information about the court cases and appeals, the Lopez family, and Judge Justice as well as a selected bibliography and source notes.
An informational and heartwarming story that celebrates the right to a free public school education for everyone in the US.
