Written as a short chapter book, this Level 3 non-fiction read is a wonderful, engaging book for readers ready for more complex stories, difficult sentence structure, and challenging vocabulary. I really enjoyed this book. It goes through some of the major events is Copeland’s life. From injuries to court visits, this is an inspiring story about following your dreams and accomplishing them through hard work and dedication. Growing up, I didn’t read many non-fiction books because I thought they were boring. This is a great example of an entertain and engaging non-fiction book. It is very easy to get swept up in the story of Copeland’s life. The illustrations are also great. I loved the amount of detail in the pictures. The muscle tone shown in Copeland’s calves in comparison to the other dancers’ more “traditional” body tone really drove home the narrative of how Copeland looked different from the other dancers, but she didn’t let that stop her. At the end of the book, there is also more information about ballet including a how-to guide for the five basic positions, a short history of ballet, and some ballet statistics. There is also a multiple choice quiz about the information in the book. A fantastic read, great for advanced readers.
