Illustrated by Julia Kuo

4 stars

Inspired by American folklore and the origin of the Bing cherry, Kuo and Blackburne create an original tall tale that tells a larger-than-life version of the story of Ah Bing. The book wonderfully encapsulates Asian-American identity and the blending of cultures.

Includes themes of ingenuity, perseverance, community, discrimination, and immigration. It does not shy away from the racism and prejudice against those deemed “different”, and presents the situation in an age-appropriate way.

I really enjoy the art style. It fit the tall tale feel of the story perfectly. The color palette really pulls you in.

The Illustrator’s and Author’s Notes at the back made me enjoy the story more. The blending of Chinese mythology and American folktale structures was really cool.

Also includes information about the little that is known about the real Ah Bing, Further Reading, and recipes for syrupy cherries and almond jelly.

A wonderful combination of history and folklore with gorgeous artwork and fun tall tale elements.
