A sweet story about celebrating a favorite holiday in a new place. Priyah loves Diwali. In India, she celebrated with family and friends, watched the fireworks, and enjoyed the colorful decorations. But when her family moves to a new place, it seems people don’t know what Diwali is. Together, she and her family find new ways to celebrate, bringing together both of their homes.

The story goes through various aspects of Diwali such as decorating, including rangoli and lights, preparing food, cleaning, and praying.

Colorful and bright illustrations and a heartwarming story. Beautiful diversity represented in Priyah’s new neighborhood. It was so sweet to see her neighbors take an interest in her culture and wanting to learn from and celebrate with her and her family.

The backmatter includes a section on Diwali and how it’s celebrated in different areas as well as a glossary that includes terms used and deities referenced.

Though Diwali is different for Priyah this year, she finds a way to celebrate her favorite holiday in her new home. Loved the balance of accepting change and holding on to traditions. A beautiful story.
