Illustrated by M. Sarah Klise

5 stars

Another fantastic read from the Klise team!

Appleton Elementary prides itself on staying they same. When the new librarian, Rita B. Danjerous, comes along and introduces a “green dot” collection, not everyone is on board. Following written interactions between various characters, readers will embark on a journey to uncover corruption, question unfair rules, and explore a love of books and reading.

Told through email communications, letters, newspaper articles, memos, and notes paired with engaging black-and-white illustrations, this book tells a powerful yet humorous story.

Klise works in ideas of freedom to read in an accessible and timeless way that doesn’t call out specific reasons for book bans and instead encourages providing age-appropriate access to information. Nice messages about the dangers of rules just for the sake of rules, freedom of expression, following your passions, and standing up for what you believe in.

The artwork is so much fun. I loved all the details.

So many puns and wordplay.

The Klises’ style is always so much fun and I especially appreciated the messages in this one.
