I didn’t really know what to expect going in to this but I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. Graveyard Shakes is a spooky tale of friendship, sisterly love, and acceptance (of loss, of life, and of oneself).

The entire atmosphere of the book was so compelling. Ghostly dance parties, spooky graveyards, an ominous sorcerer, and two sisters that couldn’t be more different. It is a delightfully spooky and odd world that is still heartwarming and fun.

I’ll admit, this one gets pretty weird and dark but I think it was well done. When children go missing near the cemetery, there’s quite a dark reason behind it that includes a father’s obsession, a terrible accident, and a boy whose torn between the cost of living and his father’s wishes.

I loved this story and its characters. A nice blend of fun and spooky. Sisters Katia and Victoria learn from one another and, through a series of creepy events, become closer.

A good fit for young readers looking for something dark and spooky. There’s plenty of twists and turns in this one. Wonderful artwork, fantastic characters, and an unforgettable tale, Graveyard Shakes was a thrill to read. Will be on the lookout for more from Laura Terry.
