Art by Lorenzo Mattotti

3 stars

Nicely told. This is a pretty standard version of the Hansel and Gretel story. We get all the elements we’ve come to expect: the siblings abandoned in the woods, the trails of stones and breadcrumbs, the house made of gingerbread, and the hungry old woman in the forest.

Lorenzo Mattotti’s india ink artwork is stunning. They add a darkly beautiful aesthetic to the tale. Haunting and lovely.

The story is straightforward, true to the well-known versions told in Gaiman’s soothing prose.

At the back is a bit of context on the history of the story and how it has changed over time.

Enjoyable overall.
