Here is another variation of the Cotton Swab Textured Picture Frame, this once using a lattice design.

Supplies:

  • Cotton swab sticks
  • Thin cardboard (food boxes)
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and hot glue
  • Paint and paintbrush
  • Masking tape
  • Plastic wrap (I usually use the clear wrapping from picture frames)
  • Have whatever you want frames handy for sizing purposes

I will basically lay out how I did my frame, but you can design yours however you would like.

How to Make the Base Frame:

1. Cut strips of cardboard to the desired length and width for your frame.

To make pieces longer, all you have to do is..
flip them over and…
glue a scrap piece of cardboard so that it covers where the two pieces meet. (You can cover the front by wrapping a piece of paper around it to hide the seam if you like.)

2. Glue the cardboard pieces together so that they outline whatever you want to frame.

3. Paint the frame as desired.

How to Make the Lattices:

1. Cut the ends off of used cotton swabs so all you are left with is the stick.

2. Join two sticks end-to-end, by hot gluing the flat ends together.

3. Continue gluing pieces together to form a longer stick until it is the width of whatever you want to frame.

4. Repeat this process to make more horizontal pieces for your lattice.

5. Take one of the long pieces and glue a short stick to it perpendicularly.

6. Repeat all the way along the length of the long piece.

7. Then hot glue a second long piece across the shorter pieces. Repeat this process all the way down the short pieces.

8. Make sure the lattices fit nicely onto your frame.

9. Once you are finished with your lattice pieces, you can paint them.

10. Attach plastic wrap to the back of the frame. See tutorial here.

11. Glue scrap pieces of cardboard to the corners on the back of the frame, making sure there is enough room for your picture in them. These will hold the picture in place.

12. Glue on the lattice pieces.

13. Insert picture and hang.
