Illustrated by Jenin Mohammed

5 stars

A beautiful story celebrating new life and special connections. Amira is excited for her baby sister’s naming ceremony. But as her friends and family arrive, she worries the name she’s chosen isn’t special enough. Soon baby sister will wake and the naming ceremony will begin. Will Amira be ready with her special gift?

This is such a sweet book. It nicely portrays the coming together of extended family and close friends. Wedlick and Mohammed bring each connection to life as Amira’s grandparents, uncle, cousins, and friends arrive for the celebration.

Gorgeous illustrations with wonderful patterns, textures, and colors. They perfectly capture the happiness and celebration of the occasion.

There is also a short note at the back of the book that gives more information on naming ceremony traditions in West Africa.

An absolutely beautiful book with a sweet story and splendid visuals. Filled with joy, love, and family traditions.
