A heartwarming and magical tale that explores family structures, fantasy versus reality, and self-discovery. Mystery, secrets, and magic combine to explore some of the complexities of growing up and coming into one’s self.

The majority of the book is in black and white, which makes the full-color fantasy scenes even more magical. The real-world artwork is lovely, nicely capturing the characters’ emotions, and making the full-color spreads all the more captivating.

The story itself was fascinating. I loved following Priyanka on her journey and seeing her grow along the way. As Priyanka explores her cultures and family history, she uncovers more than she was expecting. With an inspiring message, Pashmina is a true treasure.

There is also a glossary at the end of the book for readers who may be unfamiliar with certain Indian and Hindi words. This includes holidays, foods, and family relations. These words are integrated nicely into the story, providing natural representation and relatability for those who are already familiar with them, and a learning opportunity for those who are not.

While the pashmina in the story may not exist in this world, Chanani’s book acts as its own pashmina to inspire all who come in contact with it to reach further, follow their dreams, and see a free future for themselves. A beautiful message told in a beautiful format. An unforgettable tale.
