Illustrated by Sara Palacios

4 stars

A delightful picture book that serves as a love letter to plátanos and Dominican culture. In the story, the main character shows the diversity of plátanos, both in what dishes they can be used in and how they add to different situations. Whether to soothe disappointment, to share community, or to add to the festivities, Norman proves that plátanos really do go with everything.

Palacios’ warm and delightfully detailed illustrations perfectly compliment the text. The story emphasizes family, community, love, and togetherness. It also includes various aspects of Dominican culture such as various dishes, baseball stars, and music. A fun look at the versatility of plátanos, how they grow, and their cultural ties.

Also includes a recipe for Mangú de Plátanos.

Such a sweet story with a delightful, upbeat feel. A nice pick-me-up that celebrates plátanos and their ties to home.
