In learning there was an audio edition of this book, I was a bit hesitant about it. I loved this series growing up and still enjoy reading the books today. But because so much is expressed in the illustrations and comics, I wasn’t sure how well it could be adapted for audio.

I was pleasantly surprised therefore when I gave this a listen. Just as hilarious as the books with clever and fun additions to get the meaning across without the visuals. Some of the pictures are described or actions worked into the dialogue. Others are done through the use of sound effects. I was especially concerned for the Flip-o-rama sections, because they are such a cool aspect of the physical book. But the Sound-o-rama included in the audio version was a great alternative. Complete with super cheesy sound effects, it was funny and engaging even without visuals.

A fun read, especially for those who have read the physical book as well. Could definitely be listened to while looking at the physical book. I think the combination of the Flip-o-rama and Sound-o-rama would be especially fun.

This version also includes a section on the origins of Captain Underpants (Pilkey’s inspiration) and a list of Fun Facts at the end.

In all honesty, this was one of the most fun listening experiences I’ve had with an audiobook. Fun nostalgia with the book I grew up with as well as cool new twists for the audio format. The book includes different voice actors, sound effects, epic music, voice changes for difference characters, Sound-o-rama, and some breaking of the fourth wall with the characters talking about the narrator. Very fun and engaging for those who enjoy listening to stories and potty humor.
