Told in short chapters with simple language, this fictionalized account of Ivan’s story places Ivan at the center, giving him voice and agency in making change for himself and his friends. A wonderful story that highlights the importance of animal rights and the ethical treatment of animals.

Applegate uses many of the real events in Ivan’s life as well as elements entirely of her own creation. She includes an explanatory note at the end, giving additional information on the real Ivan. Throughout the story, the narration also includes interesting information about gorillas and other animals.

A simple read, packed with heart that focuses on friendship and helping others. It provides both education and entertainment as well as a critical look at the treatment of animals in captivity.

I listened to the audiobook and Adam Grupper really sold the voices. He gave each character their own personality. At some points, I did find it hard to follow the narration in audio format because of the short chapters. It was a bit disjointed at times. But overall, it was a good listening experience.
