Illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds

Based on the childhood experience of Georgie Badiel

5 stars

A stunning picture book following a young girl’s daily journey to collect water for her family. Along the way, Gie Gie and her mother dance, sing, and socialize, bringing their own fun to the task.

The story emphasizes the power of water and Gie Gie’s important role. A nice balance of showing the difficulty of the task as well as the ways the women and children find community in their shared work.

There is a note at the end that discusses the issue of accessing clean drinking water in many villages and the work of the Georgie Badiel Foundation and Ryan’s Well to build wells in Burkina Faso.

A heartfelt story with wonderful illustrations and an important message.
