An imaginative tale that follows the perspective of two ants as they explore an alien new world and face its many dangers.
After discovering a trove of tasty crystals, an ant scout leads the others to the stash to bring back to the queen. But while the rest of the ants head back to the colony, two ants decide to stay. Unfortunately for them, their new home is filled with unfathomable dangers around every corner.
I really enjoyed following the perspective of the ants. It was cool to see how they viewed different things in human life.
The pair faces many perils (most of which I don’t think they’d actually have survived). There are some potentially frightening moments including hot coffee, a toaster, the garbage disposal, and electrocution. May be good to keep in mind for sensitive kiddos.
I didn’t love that the ants were labeled “bad” just because they decide to stay and have their own adventure. Not sure what the messages are either. I don’t think all children’s books need morals, but this one seems to suggest you should stick with the crowd and do as you’re told. The ants are pretty much punished for making their own decisions and seeking independence. At least they get to have an epic (yet exhausting) adventure.
Nice artwork. The closeups were a nice way to emphasize the ants’ perspectives.
Not my favorite, but an interesting read especially for young readers looking for adventure with plenty of danger.
