A while ago, I found myself in possession of an extra yoga mat. Having two already, I didn’t really need another mat to do yoga on, but it has come in handy on a few occasions already. Here are a few ways to repurpose an extra yoga mat that are simple and effective.

1. Use to line shelves.
In college, I bought a cheap over-the-toilet shelving unit for bathroom storage. However, the top two shelves comprised of a few crisscrossing bars that left an uneven surface, meaning bottles and small items didn’t sit very nicely. Cutting parts of the yoga mat to fit left me with a nicely lined surface that I could actually put things on (plus a great pop of color). Hooray for bathroom organization!
2. Make your own string.
With some of the long scraps leftover from trimming in the first option, I fashioned my own mustache bow. The texture was easy to manipulate and held up well. The strips could also be used as decorative touches instead of ribbon.
3. Educational manipulatives.
Some of the children I work with absolutely love shapes, numbers, and letters. By cutting up the yoga mat, I was able to quickly make fun shapes to play with.
You can also draw your own numbers or letters on pieces of yoga mat for fun tactile learning focused on sequencing…
… or spelling.
4. Sponge mat.
For a while I was using a scrap of extra shelf lining to sit under my sponge holder, but it tended to roll up when wet, which looked less than appealing. I switched it out for a piece of yoga mat and have been happy with the results.
You can find the tutorial for how to make your own Kitchen Sponge Storage holder here.
5. Strap replacement. (Weird, but effective.)
Dogs are fun, loyal, and adorable. But they are slightly less adorable when they chew the strap right off your favorite shoes.
Yet a strip of yoga mat and some super glue allows you to create a surprisingly effective fix to tide you over until you find a new favorite pair of shoes.
