For whatever reason, I have a soft spot for celebrity memoirs. It doesn’t matter if I’m familiar with the person or not, I’m always drawn to them when I stumble across them. I’ve found that, especially with books written by comedians, you never quite know what you’re going to get. Is it going to be funny or too real, a downer or uplifting?

This one was a great read. I’ve seen some of Schumer’s stand up and think she’s hilarious so of course I wanted to read her book. It started off fun and humorous, but also took on some more serious tones.

The book had a good mix of humor and real issues. It provides crazy anecdotes about relationships, roommates, food, and fun, told in the characteristic Schumer fashion. It also deals with some hard topics such as abuse and gun violence. I was actually surprised by this range, however it worked well and made for a remarkable read. It had a nice balance that was entertaining, but still made the reader recognizing the importance of various issues, especially gun violence and societal views of women.

When I picked up this water-damaged copy from the Free Lending Library, I didn’t really know what to expend, but once I started reading, I enjoyed the ride. A fantastic book that makes the reader laugh, cry, feel uncomfortable, question the status quo, and think about society’s flaws. A great combination of wit, humor, and passion, Schumer provides an excellent read that perfectly balances serious thought and reflection with sarcasm and sex jokes.
